The Meaning Behind the Madness
This comic highlights the “Interrogation Effect.” It explores the common mistake of businesses prioritizing their own data-gathering needs over the user’s time and convenience.
What the Comic Means:
The Intent Stage: Visitor starts with high intent. They have seen the site, like the service, and are ready to hand over their information. This is the “golden moment” of marketing.
The Friction Wall: Website (representing the business owner’s logic) tries to “qualify” the lead too early. By asking for 12 required fields, the business is making the customer do all the work before they’ve even had a conversation.
The Outdated “Fax” Field: The question “Why do you need my fax number?” represents the unnecessary, legacy fields many businesses keep on their forms. Every unnecessary field is an opportunity for a customer to say, “Never mind, this isn’t worth it.”
The Abandonment Reality: The final panel is a reality check for the “Why am I not getting leads?” question. The leads existed—they were right there in Panel 1! But the business “interrogated” them until they left. This is the definition of a Leaky Funnel.
We spend thousands on ads and SEO to get people to our site. They finally arrive, they love what we do, and they click “Contact Us.” Success, right?
Not if your contact form looks like a tax audit. 📑📉
Meet our Visitor. They were ready to buy until they hit the “12 required fields” wall. As soon as the form asked for a fax number (in 2026!), they were gone. 💨
The Truth: Every field you add to your form decreases your conversion rate. If you don’t really need their home address, blood type, and fax number just to send a quote… delete those fields. 🗑️
The Lesson: Make it easy for people to give you their money. Keep your forms short, sweet, and friction-free.
The Rule of Thumb: Only ask for what you need to make the first call. 📞
