The Meaning Behind the Madness
This comic illustrates the two extremes of bad web design: The Void and The Chaos. It perfectly captures why “Analysis Paralysis” is the silent killer of online conversions.
What the Comic Means:
The Mystery Tour: In Panel 1, the Visitor is actually interested, but there’s no direction. This represents sites that have great content but forget to actually ask for the sale. If you don’t tell the user what to do next, they do nothing.
The Carnival Effect: Panel 2 shows the opposite extreme. The Landing Page panics and offers every possible option: “Buy Now!” “Sign Up!” “Watch Video!” “Follow on X!” “Read Blog!” When everything is a priority, nothing is a priority.
Hick’s Law in Action: Panel 3 is the scientific punchline. Hick’s Law states that the more choices a person has, the longer it takes them to reach a decision. In the fast-paced world of the web, “longer” usually means the user gives up and leaves.
The Data Disconnect: In the final panel, the page looks at the Analytics but lacks the self-awareness to see the design flaw. It’s a reminder that a “low click-through rate” is often just a symptom of a confused user.
We’ve all been on these two websites:
The one where you have to play “detective” just to find a contact form. 🕵️♂️
The one that looks like a neon sign in Las Vegas, screaming 15 different instructions at once. 🎰
Meet our Visitor. They wanted to engage, but they got hit with a classic case of Analysis Paralysis. > The Truth: If you give a user too many choices, the choice they’ll most likely make is “Leave.” 🚶♂️💨
The Fix: Every page should have ONE primary goal. ✅ Want them to buy? Make the “Buy” button obvious. ✅ Want them to subscribe? Keep the focus on the form.
Stop making your Landing Page do “Everything” and start making it do The Right Thing. > Does your website pass the “One Goal” test, or is it a flashing carnival of confusion? Let’s audit some CTAs in the comments! 👇
